Affiliate Marketing Tips For Beginners!

If you google the words AFFILIATE MARKETING you will see there are 12 million Five Hundred Thousand results! Hopefully when you typed these words into Google you found me on PAGE ONE! Well did you? Probably not…but hopefully soon!Business10

The next thing you would have seen is a few ads and then the next you would have seen is this –

“Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s own marketing efforts.”

The words AFFILIATE MARKETING conjure up the dreams, fantasies and aspirations for many people, young & old, seeking to set up their own online internet marketing business. The lure of earning thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars every month and seemingly without having to put too much effort towards achieving such riches is irresistible!

It doesn’t happen overnight and there is a lot of HARD work to do to get things up and running. Like anything else in life you will have to work for it and learn how to set up your internet business properly.

I have spent well over three years and a lot of money trying to set up my own internet business and let me tell you, there’s many hurdles and obstacles which need to be conquered. For beginners (I hate the word ‘newbie’) the blinkers are usually well and truly on…what I am hoping to do for you is to help you overcome the hurdles and obstacles with as little pain (and money) as I possibly can.

Affiliate marketing has many descriptions, yet all have the same meaning. Affiliate marketing is huge business on the Internet. It is a cooperative effort between merchants and an affiliate’s website. For many years now, affiliate marketing has proved to be a cost-efficient, measurable method of delivering long-term results. It has become famous for Internet sites who are trying to make some extra or additional income for their site….and there are literally millions of people trying to learn how to do it!

Every day, people are interested to learn how to become an affiliate marketer and most importantly want to make money out of it. But in many cases, new affiliates do not fully understand the affiliate world and make costly mistakes. In other words, affiliate marketing has often been misunderstood.

One of the common misconceptions about being associated with affiliate marketing is “selling”, although selling is an important consideration of affiliate marketing and the central function of a business operation. Another is that affiliate marketing is commonly linked with “advertising”. While the importance of advertising in marketing a certain product is not to be underestimated, the fact of the matter is, advertising like selling, is merely a part of the many functions of marketing.

In affiliate marketing, an affiliate is compensated for every visitor, subscriber and/or customer provided through his efforts. Compensation may be made based on a certain value for each visit. The most attractive aspect of affiliate marketing from the merchant’s viewpoint is that no payment is due to an affiliate until results are achieved.

Affiliate marketing is typically run by affiliate networks and these affiliate networks are composed of two functional bodies, the group affiliates and the group merchants. Each has their special function and role when it comes to affiliate marketing. The affiliate network acts as a third party between the merchant and the associated affiliates. The network provides the technology and necessary tools to deliver the merchant’s campaigns and offers. The affiliate network also collects commission fees from the merchant and then pays the affiliates which are part of the program.

The merchant is any web site owner that wants or desires to take advantage of performance based marketing. The benefits to the merchant are many. First, the merchant maintains and operates the affiliate program. Finding a fit for their merchandise would be the key to generating more income. The merchant has access to markets and customers without him spending valuable time searching. Banner ads on affiliate sites are not distracting to the site user. It might produce interest for that product and drive the consumer to the merchant’s website. It is also the merchant who decides how much he is willing to pay for each sale that results from a visitor sent from an affiliate.

The affiliate or the affiliate marketer also sees a lot of benefits. The affiliate is a web site owner and promotes one or more merchants and their affiliate programs. Affiliate marketing can generate a full-time income for the affiliate. But this is not an easy task to accomplish. The affiliate needs to have a better understanding with the merchant what the commission will be, expected payment method and time involved in the contract.

The affiliate has also the responsibility to represent the merchandise their user based would be most interested in. For example, if the site has a user base of mainly stay at home mothers, then on-line job openings such as surveys would be a good match for them. This group would also appreciate direct links to children’s products and informational sites. Merchandisers often provide targeted, best-seller items and personal support to their affiliate. They often offer sales promotions that will benefit the merchandiser as well as the affiliate.

Affiliate marketing is a great situation for both the marketer and the affiliate. If they would work together, there can be an advantage to both. Affiliate Marketing is an easy and inexpensive way to start, and you can be up and running within a few days. But there is one thing to consider…how to get traffic and make your offer different than all others?

  1. Hey Steve:

Thank you for a very clear explanation of affiliate marketing. I am still trying to feel my way towards an understanding of it and you helped clarify some of my confusions about it.

You pointed out that the affiliate has to be aware of his/her audience in order to be able to match the featured products and websites to their people.

I think maybe THAT’s the part of the problem that I am still puzzling over. WHO are the people that make up my potential audience for my site? Hmmmm….

You’ve given me a question to explore. Thank you.

    1. Hi Netta…thanks for your comment…if we don’t know who the target is how can we expect to attract the right audience? All it takes is a bit of research!

  2. Hey Steve,

You are absolutely spot on about beginners who have incorrect assumptions when they start with affiliate marketing. I was one of those who knew enough to understand what affiliate marketing is. Limited or incomplete knowledge is sometimes more fatal than being ignorant.

Needless to say that I failed miserably at first. Instead of quitting I took a step back and got the necessary training and foundation before I started again.

    1. Thanks for your comment Josh…like you I failed quite a few times before it finally dawned on me that just like anything else you need to learn how to do things properly!

  3. Very great tips for beginners, getting starting with affiliate marketing is always the hardest, once you develop your first profitable business is when it starts to only get easier. I developed my first successful business with WA, and dropped out of college after I decided I want to become an online entrepreneur at 19. I host earnrecurringrevenuefromhome .com on WA, I can say that the training is priceless on WA to build a sucessfull affiliate business. Success with affiliate marketing takes time, and people must realize that success isn’t created overnight. WA makes it easier than ever to create a free online business that earns recurring commissions from home on autopilot. Very helpful broken up content written in a way in which everyone can understand. Great review. Cheers!

    1. Thanks very much for your feedback Cesario…as with anything else, affiliate marketing can produce a lucrative income for everyone who tries to set up their internet business.

  4. Thanks for all this helpful information! I’ve been with Wealthy Affiliates for 2 months and it is a great community! Before that, I was clueless about affiliate marketing and had no idea how or where to start. I learned more now than I ever did during my college years. I never pictured myself getting into affiliate marketing, but I did. Special thanks to the WA community for helping improve my knowledge on affiliate marketing!

  5. Hey Steve:
This is a very good explanation of the affiliate marketing system, you are right on point about the importance of the affiliate marketer knowing who your audience are, it is crucial to making sales, and or helping your audience.
Should I put me email address on my site?

    1. Hi Sam…thanks very much for your feedback.
I have researched many different affiliate marketing systems and I have spent A LOT of money trying to get an internet business off the ground. As WA Kyle has suggested in the training, it is very important to know your niche inside out, so you can be better informed to provide the information people are looking for.
Regarding your email address…I have included mine because I want to be as open, transparent and easy to contact for anyone who wants to contact me by all means possible. What’s good for me might not be good for you…it’s a personal choice for you to make…
Again…thanks for your comments…I am very grateful!
Best wishes and much success to you!

  7. I totally agree that this form of marketing is a great situation for both the marketer and the affiliate – if it’s done correctly. I was out on my own when I first started off in the business and even though I found success…it was not enough to pay the bills. I ended up joining the community you have actually listed in this article – and my weekly pay multiplied within a month!
